A half-century after playing his first professional gigs in Detroit, Charles McPherson is at the height of his powers and a strong, viable force in jazz today. His music combines passionate feeling with intricate patterns of improvisation in a style that not only remains true to his bop origins but inventively expands upon them. Charles enjoyed/endured an epic twelve-year run with Charles Mingus (1960-1972); in 1988, he was the featured alto saxophonist on the soundtrack of Clint Eastwood’s film Bird. “One of bebop's premier torchbearers” (Nate Chinen, NYT), Charles has recorded extensively as a leader for the Prestige, Xanadu, Mainstream, and Arabesque labels.
